Home Reading
Your child’s class has started home reading! Please find the home reading duo-tang in your child’s planner bag. You will see there is an empty calendar for the next few months. There are also strategies listed to help your child read at home. After your child reads, please initial the date that they read. At the end of the month, I will collect the calendar. Please send the duo-tang and home reading books back each Monday. Your child will have the chance to switch home reading books once a week. If they need to switch more often, they can let me know.
It is best if students read every day. At the end of the month, if they have read 15 times throughout the month, they will receive a small prize!
Your child will begin to gain confidence as a reader and develop reading fluency by reading a variety of different ways, but always be sure to alternate between them. Young readers become better readers by listening to good readers and by reading themselves. You may choose to:
Always be sure to ask your child questions about the book before, during and after reading to better judge if they are understanding what they are reading.
Remember that home reading is a time to celebrate your child’s reading! This is meant to be an enjoyable activity where the child feels successful.
We have been working hard at choosing “good fit” books. I hope to always send home books that are either easy or at the right level for your child. Please let me know if the books are too hard! We are still working on consistently finding “good fit” books! Easy books allow your child to enjoy reading and practice strategies learned in class. If your child wants to read a challenging book, this may be the perfect time to take turns reading or for them to listen to you read!
